Description

Andrew Wilton is a freelance journalist, with ambitions to write a novel. He is intrigued by the reminiscences of Alex Hodge, who as a young man had visited the Meissner family in pre-war Nazi Germany. He is also fascinated by the unexplained death in wartime of Horst Meissner. He contacts the present-day Meissners, now living in Britain, and meets the great-grandson Matt, who is eager to help him with his inquiries. Among those who soon become involved are the elderly Anje (Horst's brother and Matt's grandfather); Alex Hodge and his wife Jane; and Dieter Jenke, an old friend of Horst from their days together in the Hitler Youth.

Ignoring anonymous warnings to desist from their investigation into Horst's death: Wilton is seriously assaulted, and Dieter's house is bombed. Wilton and Matt take advantage of an offer of a peaceful retreat in the Scottish Highlands. They learn of the wartime arrival of two young men who knew Horst - one of them Jurgen, a distant cousin of the local land owner, Alistair Maclean, and the other Hans Brecht.

Almost as soon as Wilton and Matt begin their enquiries, two German survivors who have remained anonymously in the district for 60 years, are killed. They came ashore in Loch Hourn; but, after a fruitless visit to the loch, they decide to ask the assistance of all the old people - including Hans Brecht. They meet in Fort William and hope to resolve the circumstances surrounding Horst’s death.

Hans tells them of a cavern in which members of the Nazi Lebensborn (including Horst) were stranded. On his second exploration, alone, Wilton discovers that the cavern is still in use with some twenty children are kept there under sedation. He learns that they are victims of a neo-Nazi programme to develop a race of superbeings designed to take over the world, and Matt's brother Gregory is actively involved.

Through a friend, Wilton is put in touch with an organisation of Nazi-hunters. Two representatives arrive, but the cavern is found to be completely empty. Next day, expecting to be taken on a further search of the cavern, Wilton and Matt are abducted by helicopter, and carried off to a trawler off Skye, where they find Gregory and his boss, Bruckner.

Wilton is shot in a scuffle, and left to die alone, while everybody else transfers to another ship. However, after three days the abandoned trawler is washed ashore and he is rescued. A mobile phone homing signal leads the investigators once more to the cavern, where they find Matt, Dieter and Harry (Alex's son) alive - but Anje has died. Wilton and Alistair go to the cottage where the two German survivors were murdered, and find Bruckner's helicopter there. Bruckner attempts to escape, but Alistair brings down the helicopter with a single rifle shot. The survivors of the adventure gather for a celebratory dinner - and Wilton has his novel to write.
